In Iran, political tensions are rising as discussions with the United States appear to be heading toward an agreement aimed at ending hostilities. A small yet vocal group of hard-liners actively oppose any concessions to Washington, using various platforms such as rallies and state media to voice their discontent.
This group, although minor, is influential, with representation in Parliament and the Supreme National Security Council. Their efforts to derail the talks are evident. While an agreement’s announcement date remains uncertain, President Trump recently held a two-hour meeting with cabinet members in the White House’s Situation Room, delaying a final decision. Iran’s chief negotiator, Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, expressed distrust toward Washington, insisting that no steps would be taken unless reciprocated first.
The internal political battle in Iran continues to escalate. State television, controlled by a hard-line director, has highlighted the country’s internal divisions, casting the negotiations as unsuccessful. This portrayal led President Masoud Pezeshkian to reprimand state television leaders. He emphasized that even the late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, advocated for negotiations despite the current narrative suggesting otherwise.
During a recent rally in Tehran, hard-line supporters gathered in large numbers, waving flags and chanting for continued resistance. Interviews by state television revealed sentiments among attendees advocating for defiance against the United States and Israel. Statements such as “punish them good” and “stand firm, we are with you until our last drop of blood” exemplify the hard-liners’ strong opposition to compromise.
