A recent poll by YouGov/The Economist reveals voter preferences edging towards socialist Democrats over MAGA Republicans. With midterm elections approaching, 51% of registered voters favor a socialist Democrat who advocates for policies like Medicare for All, halting military aid to Israel, and eliminating ICE, compared to 34% who support a MAGA Republican aligned with mass deportations and President Trump’s policies. Another 15% remain undecided.
This survey emerges amid signs of distancing within the Republican Party from Trump. For instance, Florida’s Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds has removed mentions of Trump from his campaign website, though he maintains pride in Trump’s endorsement. This adjustment was initially noted by the Miami Herald. Similarly, Iowa Republican Senate nominee Ashley Hinson diverged from Trump’s stance on the conflict in Iran, urging a swift and successful resolution.
Historically, midterm elections act as a gauge for the ruling party’s standing, with the president’s party often losing seats. Currently, Republicans hold a narrow majority in Congress. The Democratic Party seeks to leverage Trump’s declining poll numbers and dissatisfaction with his policies on immigration, the economy, and international affairs, especially amid current tensions with Iran. Rising fuel prices related to these issues add to voter concerns as Election Day nears.
White House spokeswoman Allison Schuster, when asked about the latest poll, criticized the Democrats’ leaning towards socialism, suggesting it threatens American liberty. She emphasized Trump’s commitment to preventing the U.S. from adopting socialist or communist ideologies.
Further insights from the poll show 48% favoring a socialist Democrat over a conservative Republican advocating tax cuts, the repeal of Obamacare, and abortion restrictions. Only 40% support the latter, with 11% undecided. Moreover, 55% prefer a liberal Democrat intent on maintaining Obamacare, boosting childcare support, and opposing tariffs, compared to 34% backing a MAGA Republican. Here, 11% remain unsure.
The poll, conducted from September 18 to September 21 with 1,401 registered U.S. voters, bears a 3.4% margin of error. It also identifies potential trouble for Republicans, as 46% prefer a Democratic Senate candidate for the upcoming midterms, compared to 38% opting for a Republican. Similarly, 45% would choose a Democratic congressional candidate over 36% favoring a Republican.
The Democrats face internal challenges during primaries, with candidates from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) competing against established Democrats. This election cycle has seen progress for the democratic socialist wing, with figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib securing nominations.
In Florida, Angie Nixon, a democratic socialist, won her Senate primary and will compete against Republican Ashley Moody. Florida has not elected a statewide Democrat since 2018. Trump continues to push for Republican control of Congress and has pledged to campaign for 35 crucial seats. His primary endorsements, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and opposition to Congressman Thomas Massie, have seen success, although there have been numerous election-related setbacks this cycle.
Key Senate races in Texas, Maine, New Hampshire, and Ohio remain highly contested, with Cook Political Report marking them as toss-ups. Additionally, Elon Musk’s America PAC has invested substantially across various races as Republicans aim to retain control in November.
