Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal emerged victorious in a 2-1 match against Croatia during the Round of 32 in the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. The game took place on Thursday, July 2, and extended beyond a simple win, reaching deep emotional significance for the team.
As the final whistle blew, marking the end of the match, the calendar in Portugal had turned to Friday, July 3. This day held profound importance, being the first anniversary of a tragic car accident that claimed the lives of Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 25. Jota had played 49 times for Portugal’s national team, scored 14 goals, and helped the team secure two UEFA Nations League titles. He also played prominently for Liverpool.
A ceremony took place after the match, where Portugal honored Jota’s No. 21 jersey. Ronaldo became visibly emotional during the ceremony as he donned Jota’s jersey. On Instagram, he shared a team photo captioned, “We won for us, Diogo, and Portugal!!! LET’S GOOOOO!!!!”
Ronaldo remarked on the team’s intention to honor Jota’s memory. According to FOX Sports’ Katie Shanahan, Ronaldo expressed, “It was [such a] special moment. We speak today, our group, about that — the coincidence of life. It’s unbelievable. I was amazed because the situation of today, it means a lot to us. Not only did we win the game, but also the way.”
During the match, Croatia initially took the lead with Ivan Perišić scoring in the 53rd minute. Ronaldo equalized with a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Gonçalo Ramos scored the decisive goal with a header in extra time, putting Portugal in the lead. Croatia nearly equalized again, but their goal was ruled offside after VAR review.
Ronaldo’s goal marked his third of the tournament and his first in a World Cup knockout stage throughout his distinguished career. He remains the only man to score in six separate World Cups. Both Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi are the only players to have participated in six World Cups.
Portugal will face Spain in the upcoming Round of 16, scheduled at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Monday, July 6.
