1 week ago 0

The Ellipse experienced significant damage after hosting crowds for the UFC ‘Freedom 250’ event, organized by President Donald Trump. Aerial images reveal extensive damage to the grass. President Trump hosted the UFC cage match on the White House South Lawn on June 14, 2026, coinciding with his 80th birthday. Tens of thousands of spectators gathered at the Ellipse to watch the event on large screens.

Event Impact

The aftermath images highlight the effects of one of the largest events held on White House grounds, showing the impact on this nationally important public space. Before the event, the Ellipse was covered in green grass. In contrast, images taken days afterwards show large sections reduced to brown patches and exposed soil following fight night.

Ground Damage and Restoration Efforts

In addition to damage on the Ellipse, the South Lawn also showed wear from the temporary arena and related infrastructure. Additional photographs revealed the extensive setup on the South Lawn, including a UFC octagon, lighting rigs, and large staging structures for the fight.

Cleanup operations started immediately after the event. Crews began dismantling equipment and restoring the grounds. The White House announced on X that ScottsMiracle-Gro and the National Park Service are collaborating to restore the South Lawn after the event, assuring improvements. The company pledged $1 million to aid the restoration.

Former U.S. ambassador Luis Moreno criticized the event in a post on X, drawing parallels between the damage and broader implications for the country.

Changes Under Trump’s Administration

President Trump has implemented several physical changes to the White House grounds since his return to office. These modifications include the demolition of the East Wing for a ballroom, changes to the Rose Garden, and proposing a large arch along the Potomac River.

Event Highlights

The UFC 250 fight saw Justin Gaethje defeat Ilia Topuria in an upset during the headline bout. All fights ended in a knockout or technical knockout. Trump and UFC CEO Dana White added to the spectacle with a staged walkout from the Oval Office to start the event.

Fighter Sean Strickland was removed by authorities during a separate fan event linked to the weekend. A notable incident involved heavyweight fighter Josh Hokit’s post-fight interview. He praised Trump before making a false claim about former First Lady Michelle Obama, which drew widespread attention and criticism.

Viewership and Security Concerns

UFC Freedom 250 attracted an average of 7 million viewers in the United States, with a combined audience of 17 million across the U.S. and Latin America, according to Paramount+ data reported by Reuters. Additionally, authorities arrested and charged five men linked to a foiled plot targeting senior officials during the event.
