Potential First Tropical Storm of 2026 Forms in Gulf Coast

This satellite image, courtesy of NOAA, captures a storm system developing along the Gulf Coast of Texas on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. A cluster of storms could evolve into the first named tropical storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storms are expected to produce heavy rain, causing possible floods across southern states such as Texas and Louisiana. As of Tuesday afternoon, the center of the system was located about 55 miles south-southwest of Corpus Christi, Texas, as per a report from the hurricane center.

Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, indicated that meteorologists anticipate the system will intensify, potentially becoming a tropical storm by early Wednesday. Brennan warned that coastal regions might encounter tropical storm conditions this week, whether or not the system receives an official name.

“The main hazard with these types of systems is largely the flooding from the heavy rainfall,” Brennan emphasized. “We could potentially see life-threatening flash and urban flooding from the Texas coast to central Mississippi through Thursday. Ongoing rainfall might extend the threat of floods into the weekend.”

Forecasters predict possible tornadoes from the upper Texas coast through parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 30 mph on Tuesday, nearing the 39 mph threshold necessary for it to become a named tropical storm. The National Hurricane Center assessed a 70% probability of the storm forming into a tropical cyclone within the next two days.

Houston, which hosts a World Cup match between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday, remains under a flood warning since Monday. The match venue is covered, and there have been no announcements regarding relocating or rescheduling the game.

By Thursday, expected rainfall amounts are between 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimeters), with isolated regions potentially receiving up to a foot (30 centimeters) of rain in coastal areas. A tropical storm watch is already active, covering areas from Sargent, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana. Additionally, rough surf might generate rip currents along the Gulf for the next few days.
