President Trump has urged the temporary leader of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to initiate mass firings. The president suggested that employees who worked under previous Democratic administrations are among those who should be dismissed.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Trump described his interim appointee, Bill Pulte, as having more freedom to act compared to a permanent leader. Mr. Trump noted, It sort of gives you more power, you know, for a somewhat limited period of time.
These remarks mark the most detailed comments Mr. Trump has made regarding Mr. Pulte. Pulte currently heads the Federal Housing Finance Agency and lacks national security experience. Earlier in the week, Mr. Trump announced that Mr. Pulte would replace Tulsi Gabbard as the director of national intelligence.
Mr. Trump clarified that Mr. Pulte is not slated for Senate confirmation to hold the position permanently. Since Mr. Pulte has previously been Senate-confirmed for his current position, he can serve as acting director for up to 210 days.
Pulte, known for his steadfast support of Mr. Trump, has spent over a year addressing allegations of crimes against individuals seen as political adversaries by the president. These individuals have either investigated Mr. Trump or been affiliated with institutions like the Federal Reserve, which the president claims have political biases against him.
