President Donald Trump addressed the graduates of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, praising their heroism and selflessness. He emphasized that their military careers will test them further. This marks the first time Trump has given a commencement speech at a military academy following the deployment of U.S. troops in a new conflict.
Trump referred to the graduates as America’s “first defenders” and “first responders.” He highlighted the ongoing war with Iran, which has reached its 12th week, as evidence of U.S. success. Trump posed the question of whether the conflict will be resolved through a formal agreement or continued military action.
“The only question is, do we go ahead and finish it up or are they going to be signing a document? Let’s see what happens,” Trump said.
Recently, Trump threatened renewed strikes on Iran due to stalled talks and an unstable ceasefire. However, he decided to wait, citing “serious negotiations” underway, though specifics were not disclosed. Despite political concerns and upcoming midterm elections, Trump remains patient in striking a deal to end the war.
The commencement ceremony took place amidst scorching temperatures, affecting attendees and causing at least one to need medical attention. Efforts were made to keep people comfortable through shaded areas and distribution of chilled water bottles.
Trump, who previously spoke at the academy in 2017, expressed pride in being the first president to give two commencement speeches there. He remarked on the nation’s resurgence in strength and confidence, departing from traditional nonpolitical speeches to critique past leaders and promote his policies.
“What we do really is we want to maximize it. We take advantage of it,” he said.
Traditionally, the president or vice president speaks at a military academy each year. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak at the U.S. Air Force Academy on May 28.
Before departing for Connecticut, Trump encouraged the cadets to enjoy their lives, acknowledging the vital role of the Coast Guard during hurricanes.
