Raman Challenges Bass’ Inside Safe Initiative

1 hour ago 0

City Councilmember Nithya Raman criticized Mayor Karen Bass’ Inside Safe homelessness initiative during a recent debate. Raman described the effort as costly and ineffective. She stated that this was a primary reason she decided to challenge Bass.

“I decided to push back against a system failing Los Angeles,” Raman stated. “Conditions in the city were unacceptable. I didn’t want to wait four more years for change.”

The Inside Safe program has relocated over 6,000 individuals into temporary accommodations. However, its long-term success has been questioned. According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, 42% of participants returned to homelessness by July this year. Bass countered the criticism by noting that Raman had supported the funding for the initiative in the past.

Bass emphasized her commitment to addressing homelessness, reminding citizens this was a key focus during her first term.

“I ran for mayor because we faced a crisis. Homelessness on our streets exploded. No Angelenos should be homeless,” Bass asserted.

Raman countered by arguing many residents feel worse off now compared to four years ago. She has committed to reducing unsheltered homelessness by 50% before the 2028 Olympics and eliminating it by 2030.

“We’ve had a mayor who has been M.I.A. This is unacceptable. I know the city can do better. I’ve delivered results in my district,” Raman said.

During the debate, Bass pointed to external factors contributing to homelessness increases, such as funding cuts and lack of county services.

As the mayoral election approaches, Bass urged voters to consider their choice carefully. She argued that Raman’s record showed limited progress.

“The first job of a mayor is public safety. She has consistently voted against police officers and camp removals,” Bass commented. “Choosing this candidate poses a risk.”

Bass seeks to gain support from undecided voters. Recent polls indicate a significant portion of voters remains undecided, presenting a challenge for both candidates. In particular, Bass has seen diminishing support among Latino voters, where Raman currently leads.

Observers of the race are keenly interested in the candidates’ positions on key issues like police leadership and their responses to wildfires, areas where Bass has faced criticism. The upcoming televised debate is expected to address these topics.

The live debate, hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 in partnership with Loyola Marymount University, will provide insights into the candidates’ positions on these pressing issues.
