Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has renewed her membership with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) after a seven-year lapse. This move comes as the organization gains national attention following a series of Democratic primary victories. Ocasio-Cortez, seen as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, rejoined DSA this month amid the group’s increasing influence.
Though her formal membership halted for seven years, Ocasio-Cortez maintained close ties with the organization, which continued to recognize her as a member. DSA confirmed her active membership in a statement shared with City & State New York, a local news platform. Her initial membership began in 2018 but lapsed in 2019. She has now renewed it in August 2026.
The lapse in her membership occurred despite her identifying herself with DSA’s New York City chapter, prompting the organization’s leaders to reassess her membership status. Previously, manual renewal of memberships was necessary each year, but DSA has since transitioned to automatic renewals.
Washington Post columnist Megan McArdle humorously remarked on X that the situation could easily happen to anyone, illustrating the matter in a benign light. However, skepticism remains among some observers who suspect the renewal was strategic, coinciding with DSA’s surge in popularity and her potential presidential ambitions.
Various commentators on social media expressed skepticism or amusement regarding her renewed membership, offering comments that ranged from humorous anecdotes about membership dues to more pointed critiques of her political activities.
Despite Ocasio-Cortez’s historical affiliation with DSA, The Washington Post recently highlighted internal debates within the organization regarding a potential endorsement for the 2028 presidential race, with Ocasio-Cortez being a central figure in these discussions.
Fox News Digital reached out to Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment, but they did not respond.
