Russia Criticizes U.S. Military Base Proposal in Lithuania

54 minutes ago 0

Russia has expressed concerns over plans for a permanent U.S. military base in Lithuania. Lithuania’s initiative to remove restrictions on nuclear weapons also drew criticism from Moscow.

U.S. Base Consideration

Lithuania’s Prime Minister, Mindaugas Sinkevicius, announced readiness to finance a new American base in the Baltic region. This statement followed President Donald Trump’s interest in assessing the viability of such a facility.

Currently, around 1,000 U.S. soldiers are deployed in Lithuania on a rotational basis.

Constitutional Amendments

The Lithuanian parliament voted to advance constitutional changes removing bans on weapons of mass destruction. This move could allow NATO nuclear weapons in Lithuania, which shares borders with Russia’s Kaliningrad and Belarus.

A final vote is expected in mid-January, as indicated by Lithuania’s parliamentary speaker.

Russian Response

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that NATO forces near Russia’s borders are viewed as tension escalations. The potential deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania draws similar concerns.

Peskov highlighted that these actions could lead to increased tension, forcing Moscow to adopt measures for security.

This evolving situation will be monitored for further developments.
