Recent satellite images reveal Russia’s strengthening of defenses around the Crimean Bridge. This bridge links the Crimean peninsula with Russian territory, southeast of Ukraine. The increased military attention comes as Ukraine intensifies its campaign against Crimea.
Images from Google Earth and the European Union’s Copernicus satellites display new floating buoys surrounding the bridge. The visuals were captured between October 7, 2025, and June 16, 2026. These fortifications aim to hinder explosive-laden drones traveling on water, enabling Russian forces to better intercept surface threats, according to Sidharth Kaushal from the Royal United Services Institute in London.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has escalated attacks on Crimea. These strikes focus on Russian logistics and fuel sites that support operations in southern Ukraine. Ukraine has targeted these areas with drones, including oil facilities near Moscow. Ukraine’s objective is to cut off Crimean support from Moscow.
Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, serves both as a military base and a holiday spot for Russian tourists. Despite ongoing conflicts, Kyiv remains committed to reclaiming Crimea and other territories globally recognized as part of Ukraine. Russia, however, is unwilling to relinquish control, making territorial disputes a core issue in stalled peace negotiations.
The Crimean Bridge, also known as the Kerch Bridge, connects Russia’s Krasnodar region to the peninsula. Opened by President Vladimir Putin in 2018, the bridge symbolizes Russian control, making it a prime target for Ukraine. The bridge has experienced closures due to attacks, including an October 2022 bombing that severely damaged its structure.
To protect the bridge, Russia employs netting and buoys, a strategy in place for years. Recently, Crimea’s authorities restricted fuel sales to civilians and halted outdoor activities, signaling Ukraine’s successful pressure on Russian resources in the region.
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated Ukraine’s goal to isolate Crimea. In this effort, Ukraine struck several locations near the Crimean Bridge, affecting oil sites and Russian radar installations. The Ukrainian military reported damage to the Kavkaz oil port in Krasnodar and supply ferries, further straining Russian operations.
