The San Francisco 49ers are grappling with the loss of yet another wide receiver due to injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan informed reporters that Deebo Samuel is out for at least two weeks because of a hamstring strain. The 30-year-old was injured during Sunday’s 32-29 victory against the Seattle Seahawks.
This injury is part of a growing list for the team’s wide receiver position early in the season. Christian Kirk, Demarcus Robinson, and De’Zhaun Stribling are all currently sidelined. In addition, Ricky Pearsall will miss the remainder of the season following PCL reconstruction surgery.
Samuel’s career with the 49ers spans seven seasons before he joined the Washington Commanders in 2025. San Francisco welcomed back the 2021 All-Pro with a one-year contract this offseason. In his return, Samuel has delivered 206 receiving yards, 79 rushing yards, and three touchdowns over five games for the undefeated team. He has also contributed significantly on special teams, returning 11 kickoffs for 281 yards.
Samuel left the game against the Seahawks in the third quarter after taking a hit from linebacker Drake Thomas. He remained on the field before being transported off. Despite the setback, the 49ers concluded the Week 5 game with four healthy wide receivers. Mike Evans played a crucial role in their NFC West triumph, recording 113 yards and a touchdown. General manager John Lynch might need to bolster the wide receiver ranks as Jordan Watkins stands second among healthy wideouts, but with only two catches so far this season.
With Shanahan’s update, Samuel will be missing the opportunity to compete against his former team when the 49ers face the Commanders on the upcoming “Monday Night Football.” Additionally, he may sit out the Week 7 game against the Atlanta Falcons before the team’s bye week.
