TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)— Savannah Guthrie, a host of the “Today” show, appealed to viewers for help regarding her missing mother. This comes after news outlets reported that a ransom note months earlier suggested her mother, Nancy Guthrie, had died.
“We are in agony, and we cannot be at peace. … We love our mom. We’ll never stop looking for her,” Guthrie stated emotionally at the “Today” desk in New York, holding a tissue in her left hand.
Situation Overview
Nancy Guthrie, 84, went missing from her Tucson-area home on February 1. The FBI later released video footage showing a masked individual at her door. Blood found on her porch added to the mystery, but the case remains unresolved.
Several media outlets, aware of ransom notes after Nancy’s disappearance, withheld details during the early investigation stages. Tucson TV station KOLD reported receiving demands for cryptocurrency and claims of her passing. CNN’s reports corroborated these notes, indicating that her captors didn’t intend harm, yet she died shortly after disappearing.
Savannah Guthrie’s Public Appeal
Referring to NBC News, Savannah Guthrie said, “I don’t have any comment on this story. I’m not involved in our coverage. But I can’t pretend I’m not here. And since I am, I want to just take the opportunity to ask people — really to beg people — to come forward. Somebody knows something.”
Investigation Insights
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department deferred questions to the FBI, which opted not to comment. Tom Morrissey, a retired chief U.S. Marshal in Arizona, mentioned that authorities sometimes release ransom note details publicly to assist in finding a suspect. However, they often keep certain specifics private to safeguard the investigation, especially when the investigation’s direction is uncertain.
“It’s still an open investigation,” Morrissey said. “These things can go into directions you wouldn’t believe to be possible.”
Bob Krygier, a recently retired lieutenant with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, highlighted that revealing a missing person’s presumed death can damage credibility unless a body is recovered or significant time passes. “Once you start making statements from the law enforcement side that has speculation, you lose so much credibility,” Krygier noted.
Search Efforts
In the weeks following Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, volunteers and search teams combed through the surrounding desert, characterized by cactuses, bushes, and boulders. On a recent sweep near the Arizona-Mexico border, no trace of Nancy was found.
Throughout the ordeal, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have appeared in social media videos asking for public tips. She encouraged people to offer prayers, reflecting that her mother might now be dancing in heaven “with our daddy.”
