Seattle Mayor Defends Ousting Police Chief Amid Shooting Investigation

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson defended her decision to remove the city’s police chief, calling it the “right decision at the right time.” She did not provide detailed reasons for the dismissal. This leadership change occurred as police continue to investigate a fatal gang-related shooting during a food festival near the Space Needle last weekend.

At the scene, a 15-year-old was arrested and charged with assault, although documents indicate that the weapon used by the teenager was not involved in the deaths of two bystanders.

Critics, including some community organizations and City Council members, have criticized Wilson and former Police Chief Shon Barnes for their delayed communication about the shootout’s details, such as whether any suspects remained at large. Barnes, the city’s second Black police chief, had been praised for his efforts in officer recruitment and crime reduction downtown.

Mayor Wilson, alongside interim chief Andre Sayles, acknowledged Barnes for his service, stating she had better insights into police operations than her detractors. She noted multiple factors contributed to her decision to ask for Barnes’ resignation, with the events of Sunday being one such factor.

Deputy Chief Sayles announced that police presence at public festivals would increase for the remainder of the summer. He expressed confidence that investigators are nearing the arrest of additional suspects involved in the shooting.

The shootout occurred during the final hours of the Bite of Seattle, a notable three-day event attracting numerous vendors and performers. This incident resulted in three deaths, including one suspect, and injured four others, including a 2-year-old boy.
