Sen. Mark Kelly Criticizes Far-Left Proposals Impacting Democrats’ Image

Senator Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., addressed the impact of far-left proposals on Democratic approval ratings during an appearance on “Next Question with Katie Couric.” He expressed that calls to abolish the police, eliminate prisons, discard borders, and defund the Pentagon contributed to the party’s low ratings.

“There are folks out there that say things that don’t make sense to the American people, like abolish the police or get rid of jails and prisons, get rid of the border, defund the Pentagon,” Kelly stated. “Those things don’t make sense.”

Couric asked if the Democratic Party’s ideological split could harm candidates in the midterms and the 2028 presidential race. Kelly acknowledged this possibility, stating, “It could cost us some seats. I think that’s very, very possible.” He distanced himself from the party’s radical faction, noting some voters mistakenly associate extreme proposals with all Democrats.

Kelly emphasized, “That’s not the Democratic Party I’m in. Those aren’t the policies I support.” He aimed to separate his stance from far-left proposals after Democratic socialists achieved several primary victories.

“If we come to the conclusion that, you know, I’m the right person for this and my family’s on board, and we also consider what it takes,” he added.

Kelly noted his interest in a 2028 presidential campaign, encouraged by his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords. He explained that his decision would consider family support and electoral viability.

Despite the challenges, a Fox News poll showed Democrats leading Republicans by seven points among registered voters, 53% to 46%. Additionally, 68% of Democrats expressed strong motivation to vote compared to 57% of Republicans. This marked the highest Democratic support on Fox News’ generic congressional ballot since 1996.
