Senator Cory Booker expressed his concerns on Sunday regarding the potential impact of Graham Platner’s candidacy on the Democratic party. Platner, the main contender for the Democratic Senate nomination in Maine, has faced scrutiny following reports of his extramarital communications.
In an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Booker addressed queries about whether Platner’s personal life could negatively affect Democrats’ hopes of securing a pivotal Senate seat. Booker stated, “Yeah, I have concerns. That guy has questions to answer. And that’s what campaigns are for.”
Booker stressed that Democratic control of the Senate is critical, citing the need to counteract an “out-of-control president” who, in his view, has been increasing costs in several sectors, including healthcare, child care, and fuel.
Platner’s campaign resonates as a progressive movement in Maine. However, his past offensive online remarks about women and other topics increase Democratic concerns. Reports emerged a day prior that Platner’s wife had informed his campaign of his indiscretions, spurring Senate Republicans to exploit the situation by distributing these reports and criticizing Platner.
Among Democrats, Booker, recognized as a former presidential candidate and a possible contender for 2028, has notably voiced his apprehensions.
The Platner campaign has yet to respond to Booker’s statements. Meanwhile, Senator Andy Kim from New Jersey mentioned on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he isn’t focused on the Maine race and hasn’t met Platner. “I will work with whoever the people of Maine elect,” Kim stated, adding that he hopes they select a candidate who will challenge the current president.
