Shooting Near the White House: Investigation Continues

1 month ago 0

The Metropolitan Police Department is looking into the events surrounding a shooting near the White House that left a bystander injured. The individual, who underwent surgery, remains in stable condition. The police aim to determine how many shots were fired and who struck the bystander.

On Saturday evening, Nasire Best, aged 21 from Dundalk, Maryland, initiated the incident by approaching the northwest corner of the White House and opening fire at a Secret Service checkpoint. Officers returned fire, resulting in Best’s death. A male bystander, whose identity has not been disclosed, was caught in the crossfire and was later brought to the hospital by emergency services.

The investigation will also assess if the Secret Service acted appropriately during the situation. Once concluded, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will independently review the findings. Fortunately, no Secret Service personnel were harmed during the incident.

Reporters on the White House’s north lawn captured audio of the exchange, which included the sound of numerous gunshots. Information has surfaced that Best had been monitored by law enforcement for a year. The Secret Service had identified him for suspicious behavior near the White House, including attempts to access entry points.

Previously, in June, Best obstructed a vehicle trying to access the east side of the White House and was charged with unlawful entry. He reportedly claimed to be Jesus Christ during the arrest. In July, he ignored warnings and entered a restricted area on the White House grounds, leading to another arrest. A court hearing was set for August; however, he missed it, prompting a bench warrant. While Best resided near Baltimore, the warrant was only applicable within Washington D.C., raising questions about his movements before the shooting.

This incident brings to light the ongoing concerns surrounding security near significant locations.
