A significant incident occurred in Manhattan when two columns buckled and five floors collapsed at a building under construction. This led to a large-scale response from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the situation in a press conference, expressing concern over the building’s unstable condition.
The FDNY received a call at 7:57 a.m. reporting falling bricks from a 37-story high-rise located at 235 East 42nd Street. As per FDNY reports, floors 21 through 26 caved in, and the building showed multiple cracks and sagging floors. The site, once the global headquarters of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, is being transformed into residential units.
Mamdani mentioned witnessing additional movement in a compromised column since arriving on site. First responders and structural engineers are now collaborating with the project engineer to devise plans to stabilize the affected floor. Describing the situation as extremely serious, officials have since shut down Second Avenue and restricted access to East 42nd Street. Furthermore, East 43rd Street has been taped off to secure the area.
As a precaution, nearby buildings have been evacuated, and construction workers were safely removed from the site, with no injuries to workers or civilians reported. A construction worker revealed that his family expressed fears that the building had collapsed. Cliff Johnson from Steamfitters Local 638 noted that the project opted for non-union labor. He cited improper shoring as the reason for the crumbling beams and floors, suggesting the possibility of evacuating the opposite side of the structure.
The construction involved gutting the 33-story building and plans to add 16 additional stories. The incident caused significant disruptions, with evacuations and street closures impacting commuters. A nearby school, attended by around 400 students, was evacuated due to the incident.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced detours for the M42 buses and delays for northbound M101, M102, and M103 buses, as well as both directions for M42. City inspectors are investigating the site and advising commuters to steer clear of the area.
In 2025, the building at 235 East 42nd Street recorded seven OATH violations related to construction safety, resulting in penalties exceeding $32,000. These violations, including a $10,000 penalty for failing to notify the Department of Buildings (DOB) of a construction incident, were resolved according to building records.
