Driver Charged in Fatal Cyclist Incident

In Tennessee, a driver is accused of hitting a group of college cyclists, resulting in the deaths of two and serious injuries to five others. According to an affidavit filed by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, John Alexander Benfield faces charges including two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of reckless aggravated assault. This incident took place on a Wednesday involving members of the Milligan University cycling team on Highway 19E near Simerly Creek Road.

Details of the Crash

Investigators reported that Benfield was driving a 2003 Subaru Baja Sport behind another vehicle. When the vehicle ahead of him changed lanes, Benfield allegedly failed to spot the cyclists in time. There is reportedly ‘no physical evidence’ of Benfield attempting to brake or take evasive action before the crash happened.

Milligan University sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers were pronounced dead at the site, with seven other cyclists suffering serious or critical injuries.

University and Community Response

Milligan University expressed profound shock and sadness over the tragedy, requesting prayers for the victims, their families, and the campus community. ‘There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss,’ stated the university.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The affidavit mentioned an odor of marijuana detected in Benfield’s vehicle. However, there is no indication if Benfield was impaired. The ongoing investigation led by the Tennessee Highway Patrol involves witness interviews and evidence review. Findings will be submitted to the district attorney’s office upon completion.

Benfield’s bond has been set at $150,000. Meanwhile, USA Cycling confirmed the loss of Engdahl and Rogers and expressed condolences to the affected families and community.
