Tennessee Volunteers Face Challenges with Player Suspension

The Tennessee Volunteers’ offseason has been challenging. It began with the dismissal of five-star transfer Chaz Coleman from Penn State. Recent developments have compounded their difficulties.

On Wednesday, the team discovered that star linebacker Arion Carter, who has 2027 draft aspirations, is suspended for multiple games by the NCAA. The suspension stems from a violation involving his agent.

Tennessee star linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended for two games by the NCAA because he returned to college after his agent had paid for a $427 flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility, reported Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News.

Carter’s situation is unique. He initially entered the 2026 NFL draft but withdrew after an injury necessitated surgery. Before the injury, his agent covered a flight. Although Carter reimbursed the flight cost, the NCAA deemed it an impermissible benefit, resulting in his suspension.

The NCAA stated that rules prohibit student-athletes from signing with agents to explore NFL draft options. Carter knowingly breached these established guidelines. When NCAA rules are violated, student-athletes are declared ineligible, and schools collaborate with the national office on reinstatement conditions, which may include reimbursement and game suspensions.

The suspension sidelines Carter for games against Furman on Sept. 5 and Georgia Tech on Sept. 12. Despite this, the Vols do not expect it to derail their season, although losing a key player is unwelcome.

Last year, Carter earned second-team All-SEC honors with 76 tackles, including six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two passes defended, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Head Coach Josh Huepel expressed disagreement with the NCAA’s decision. He emphasized that Carter acted in his best interest for his health. Carter is set to graduate in public health with Dean’s List recognition in August. The team supports Carter and looks forward to his participation in training camp next week.
