Founded by abolitionists in 1865, The Nation has chronicled the political and cultural scenes, providing a critical, independent, and progressive voice.

In 2011, Richard Kyte, an ethics professor at Viterbo University, observed that two colleagues were becoming increasingly isolated. He proposed regular meetings at a café every Wednesday at 6:30 am for breakfast, located five blocks from their campus in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
