President Donald Trump publicly urged U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro to reconsider the decision to drop charges related to vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump expressed his concerns on Truth Social, sharing images purportedly showing vandalism and alleging witness accounts.
According to Trump, witnesses observed individuals with their hands in the water at the site where slashes appeared. He criticized Pirro for dropping the felony vandalism case against David Hearn, a former Olympian. Trump asserted the decision was influenced by external pressures and questioned Pirro’s judgment.
Hearn had been indicted on charges of damaging the pool’s coating, allegedly causing over $1,000 in damages. Park Police claimed Hearn ignored warnings from a National Park Service employee but later issues with the pool’s installation came to light.
Prosecutors revealed missing documentation initially misrepresented the case, with further evidence indicating contractor errors in the pool’s installation. The DOJ stated these revelations undermined the claims against Hearn, leading to the dismissal of the charges without prejudice, leaving room for future legal action.
Hearn’s legal team condemned the case, citing it as government overreach and expressed satisfaction at the court’s decision, asserting Hearn’s innocence. The case remains a contentious topic, particularly given the political affiliations and representation involved.
