The Effects of Scratching on Skin Irritation and Inflammation

1 hour ago 0

Overview of Scratching and Skin Irritation

Scratching a bug bite or rash can be tempting. While it offers temporary relief, research indicates it may worsen the itch and prolong inflammation. Scratching is a natural reaction to skin irritants, but it can exacerbate conditions like eczema.

Research on Scratching and Inflammation

University of Pittsburgh researchers explored why scratching increases swelling and its potential benefits. Led by Professor Daniel H. Kaplan, the team studied the relationship between itch, scratching, and inflammation.

Mice were used in experiments to mimic allergic contact dermatitis, an eczema-like condition. Skin reactions similar to those from poison ivy and nickel were used to study the effects.

Experiments involved two groups: normal mice and genetically modified mice lacking itch-sensing neurons. Some mice could scratch freely, while others wore a collar to prevent it.

Findings and Observations

Scratching activated mast cells, which function as part of the body’s defense system. These cells release histamine and other chemicals causing itchiness and inflammation.

Mice that scratched released more substance P, further activating mast cells and extending the itch-scratch cycle. In contrast, those prevented from scratching experienced less inflammation.

Benefits and Drawbacks

Scratching may reduce levels of skin bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, suggesting an evolutionary benefit against bacterial infections. The physical damage it causes likely outweighs these benefits when dealing with chronic itching.

Despite its pleasurable sensation, scratching mostly provides defense against bacterial skin infections, as evidence suggests.

Recommendations for Itch Relief

The American Academy of Dermatology advises cold compresses and 1% hydrocortisone cream for itch relief. The study’s publication in the journal Science enhances understanding of scratching’s effects on skin health.

These insights underline the need to avoid scratching to reduce prolonged inflammation and skin damage effectively.
