Ray Broshears, a gay preacher from San Francisco, made waves in 1973 when he formed a street vigilante group to protect LGBTQ+ individuals in the Tenderloin neighborhood. He openly stated his desire to instill fear in those who were targeting his community. Even then, ‘Reverend Ray’ was regarded as a problematic and controversial figure, not only for his militant methods but also for challenging societal norms.
The group he established, known as the Lavender Panthers, represented how the queer community actively sought to address the lack of safety and care in a homophobic environment. This venture played a significant role in paving the way for future mutual aid movements.
Despite their noteworthy actions, the Lavender Panthers remain relatively obscure in the annals of queer history. While the 2018 Newsweek article titled ‘The Most Dangerous Gay Man in America Fought Violence With Violence’ provides a comprehensive account, documentation of such queer mutual aid organizations is rare. Both Broshears and the Lavender Panthers now have dedicated Wikipedia pages, reflecting their enduring impact.
Reverend Ray was a master of publicity, contributing articles to local newspapers and orchestrating eccentric publicity stunts, like staging a fake crucifixion outside a company accused of discrimination. These antics alienated him from mainstream gay rights activists but ensured the Lavender Panthers were remembered.
Many other queer defense groups operated discreetly, including those dedicated to lesbians, trans people, and people of color, often avoiding exposure to safeguard their members. As a result, many of these groups’ histories may have been lost.
For further insight into the Lavender Panthers, readers can explore Sonja Anderson’s article ‘The Controversial Gay Priest Who Brought Vigilante Justice to San Francisco’s Streets’ in Smithsonian Magazine and Eric Markowitz’s work in Newsweek. They provide extensive coverage of this historical chapter.
