Tropical Storm Bertha’s Arrival and Impact

Tropical Storm Bertha made its way to southern Louisiana and Texas, bringing heavy surf and local flooding along the Gulf Coast on Thursday. The storm weakened to a tropical depression shortly after its arrival. Despite the downgrade, wind gusts consistent with tropical storm strength lingered along the upper Texas coast throughout Thursday evening. The National Hurricane Center advised that water levels might remain elevated due to storm surge.

Remnants and Flooding Threat

Even after dissipating, Bertha’s remnants were forecasted to produce 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.6 cm) of rain, with isolated spots receiving up to 4 inches (10.1 cm). This heavy rainfall had the potential to cause flash flooding in coastal and south Texas regions.

Initial Landfall and Path

On Wednesday, Bertha initially grazed southern Louisiana and moved slowly westward. The storm struck land for the second time about 75 miles (115 kilometers) northeast of Galveston, Texas, on Thursday afternoon. It maintained tropical storm status for a few hours before becoming a depression, with maximum sustained winds recorded at 38 mph (61 kph) or less.

Impact on Space Activities

Clouds related to Bertha led SpaceX to postpone their Starship launch scheduled for Thursday evening in southern Texas. The launch was shifted to Friday, as clear skies were expected then.

Minimal Damage Reports

Since forming on Monday in the Gulf of Mexico, no casualties or major damage occurred. However, some coastal flooding was noted near New Orleans when it initially came ashore. Most of the storm’s heavy rainfall stayed over the Gulf, minimizing the impact on land.

“Tropical storm winds extended up to 140 miles (225 kilometers) from Bertha’s center,” stated the hurricane center.

Galveston and Nearby Areas

In Galveston, officials advised residents to prepare for gusty conditions but did not anticipate significant effects. Businesses remained open, though precautionary measures were taken, such as the cancellation of sightseeing boat tours.

An official from the Galveston Historic Seaport said, “We’ll definitely be open. We usually close for big hurricanes.” Meanwhile, a nearby hotel’s representative remarked, “It seems like a normal day. Restaurants are clicking. Everything’s great.”

Florida’s Encounter with Bertha

Bertha’s effects reached Florida, where strong winds damaged a beach boardwalk in Pensacola and toppled a Waffle House sign onto a car in Panama City Beach. Officials urged swimmers to avoid the Gulf due to dangerous surf conditions and rip tides.

Atlantic and Pacific Storms

Bertha became the second tropical storm in the Atlantic hurricane season, following Tropical Storm Arthur, which earlier brought heavy rains to the southeastern U.S. Meanwhile, in the eastern Pacific, Hurricane Fausto remained over 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from Baja California but posed threats with life-threatening surf and rip tides in southern California.
