Trump Plans Upgrades for Gifted Air Force One Amid Security Concerns

President Donald Trump announced plans to send the recently received Air Force One plane for upgrades due to concerns about its security features. The plane, gifted by Qatar, will be upgraded to enhance its capabilities. Trump relayed this information upon returning from the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey.

When questioned by reporters, Trump confirmed the plane has significant capabilities. He stated, “It has a lot of capability,” and explained that the jet would undergo enhancements in about a month. The details of these upgrades were not specified.

Earlier this month, Trump made headlines by choosing to return from a NATO summit in Turkey aboard a different presidential aircraft. This switch led to speculation regarding the readiness of the Qatari-donated jet. Despite denying that security concerns influenced his decision, Trump acknowledged the dangers of presidential life, mentioning he is “No. 1 on the kill list for Iran.”

NBC News reported the Secret Service advised Trump to use the older plane because of its departure point’s proximity to the Middle East, especially since hostilities with Iran had resumed. This advice followed concerns about the new jet’s security features.

The Justice Department subpoenaed four New York Times journalists after they reported on security issues related to the new Air Force One. The luxurious Boeing 747-8 aircraft was presented to Trump by the Qatari royal family in 2025. It features a distinctive red, white, and dark-blue color scheme, departing from the previous lighter blue.

Unveiled in June at Joint Base Andrews, Trump celebrated the jet as a “flying White House at a level of luxury no one has ever seen before,” signifying its opulence. He used the plane to travel to North Dakota for an event celebrating Theodore Roosevelt.

The jet is a temporary solution while Boeing continues development on the next-generation Air Force One planes, expected by 2028.
