Trump’s Public Criticism of Netanyahu and Its Implications

2 weeks ago 0

Last year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised President Donald Trump as the “greatest friend Israel ever had in the White House.” Now, things have changed. Trump has criticized Netanyahu in a way uncommon for American leaders. He even suggested Israel wouldn’t exist without him, calling Netanyahu’s judgment into question.

Netanyahu has led Israel through four U.S. presidencies, often creating tension. Yet, Trump’s public remarks are unique. Recently, Trump criticized Israeli actions in Lebanon, which could harm negotiations with Tehran. Amid political challenges in the U.S., Trump is eager to end the unpopular war.

Aaron David Miller, a veteran Middle East adviser, stated, “If Netanyahu gets in between something Trump really wants, and that’s out of this war, he’s prepared to use the leverage that he has.” An agreement is set for signing in Luzern’s Burgenstock resort on Friday.

Speaking at the G7 summit in France, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s recent decisions. He restated his claim, “Without the U.S., there would be no Israel. Without me, there would be no Israel.” He urged Netanyahu to act responsibly concerning Lebanon.

In recent years, U.S. bipartisan support for Israel has waned. Many liberals oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza, while some conservatives question continued U.S. support. Concerns about antisemitism exist on both sides of the political spectrum.

Halie Soifer from the Jewish Democratic Council of America criticized Trump for suggesting Israel’s survival depended on him. “It’s deeply offensive to the vast majority of Jews who care about Israel’s future,” Soifer said.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have also criticized Netanyahu. They handled their disagreements more discreetly, wary of backlash. Conservative groups have mixed opinions about Trump’s criticism. Matt Brooks of the Republican Jewish Coalition likened the disagreements to family spats, noting Trump’s consistent support for Israel.

Brooks highlighted Trump’s actions, such as moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and the release of Israeli hostages from Gaza. In contrast, he argued Biden never had the same reservoir of goodwill.

Pro-Israel advocate Mort Klein believes Trump should have kept the comments private. He noted Trump’s favorable statements about authoritarian leaders as a contrast. Klein, from the Zionist Organization of America, worries comments could signal Trump’s shift to appeal to Israel critics.

Klein said, “That worries me.” Americans’ increased hostility toward Israel may influence Trump’s public statements, raising concern among pro-Israel supporters.
