Trump’s Secret Plane Switch Due to Security Threat

President Donald Trump revealed on Tuesday night that he covertly changed planes during his return from Turkey in July, citing a security threat as the reason for the maneuver. He explained that the decision was made by the Secret Service and military personnel who advised against staying on Air Force One.

While speaking to reporters, Trump mentioned, “They wanted me to go on a different flight, a different plane.” He acknowledged the presence of a threat without providing details, stating, “I guess there was a threat out there.” According to NBC News, supported by The Washington Post’s report, Trump discreetly transferred to an unmarked jet using a catering truck on July 8, after boarding Air Force One publicly. This private flight took him from Ankara to a base in the United Kingdom, while reporters and White House staff believed he was still on Air Force One.

“I think actually the plane that I flew on was at greater risk. I think it was at greater risk because that would be the plane I think that they would be more likely to go for,” Trump stated.

He did not clarify why the unmarked C-32 jet, unlisted as Air Force One, might have been a more attractive target. NBC News further reported that the switch was linked to an Iranian plot, potentially involving a missile attack on Air Force One as it left Turkey. Remaining on the decoy plane were journalists and senior White House staff, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, figures in the presidential succession line.

Trump remarked, “Any consequential president has a lot of threats. Nonconsequential presidents don’t get threatened, and I think that I may be the most consequential president.” He indicated he did not extensively question the threat but was unsurprised by its existence.

Congressional Democrats are pressing for officials to provide a briefing on the details surrounding Trump’s flight and associated security threats.
