U.S. Demands Action After Attack on American Journalist in West Bank

6 hours ago 0

President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has called for Israel to arrest and prosecute individuals responsible for assaulting an American journalist in the occupied West Bank. The appeal comes as Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged a crackdown on settler violence, adding pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

Huckabee condemned the attack on Heidi Levine, a photojournalist for the Washington Post, labeling it a “despicable act of terror.” He asserted that the perpetrators should face lengthy prison terms. Huckabee stated, “Those who attacked unarmed reporter should spend years in prison.” He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and urged arrests.

The Washington Post shared footage of the attack. Rubio expressed concern over the images and reiterated a need for Israel to prevent such incidents. He highlighted that the U.S. has made its expectations clear to Israeli authorities. Rubio’s stance underscores the Trump administration’s focus on deterring settler violence in the West Bank, stating, “We don’t need that right now; Israel doesn’t need that right now.”

Levine’s Attack

Heidi Levine was covering Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, when she was attacked. According to her daughter, Levine sustained severe injuries, including a broken rib and multiple fractured vertebrae. Her finger required surgery, as reported by the Associated Press.

Witnesses described how Levine was kicked for about 10 minutes while trying to protect her equipment. Her passport, phone, and wallet were stolen. Jasper Nathaniel, an independent journalist, stated Levine was unable to stand after the attack. Following the incident, she was hospitalized.

The Israeli police have initiated an investigation. Netanyahu raised doubts about the attackers’ identities, suggesting alternative culprits despite reports identifying them as Israeli settlers. Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department condemned the violence, with Rubio seeking further details from the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

Settler Violence Background

Huckabee’s criticism is notable given his support for Israel. Despite this, he has consistently condemned settler attacks. In August, he called a siege on Palestinian homes an “act of terror.” His recent demands highlight ongoing efforts to address assaults on Americans while maintaining his broader support for Israel.

Rubio’s comments indicate a diplomatic stance from the Secretary of State, adding weight to U.S. criticism. International scrutiny of settler violence has increased, with Reuters reporting at least 170 attacks since late September, near the start of the olive harvest. Yesh Din, an Israeli monitoring group, notes a high rate of unprosecuted settler violence, with minimal indictments leading to convictions.

European diplomats and a French mayor were also attacked recently in the West Bank, intensifying the call for civilian and international visitor protection. Incidents like Levine’s demonstrate a recurring issue for American journalists facing hostility from settlers.

Implications for Netanyahu

These events emerge as the Trump administration addresses settler policy in the West Bank. In February, Trump opposed Israeli annexation following cabinet measures to expand control there, as reported by Newsweek. Congressional Democrats have also urged Netanyahu’s government to curb settler violence.

Leading Democrats have asked Israel to investigate and prosecute those responsible for violence against American citizens. This criticism coincides with upcoming elections in Israel, influencing Netanyahu’s political dynamics, though it may not signify a broader U.S. policy shift. The Trump administration’s opposition to annexation and condemnation of violence coexists with military and political support for Netanyahu.
