Republicans’ satisfaction with President Donald Trump’s economic management has waned, as revealed by a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Despite this, the majority remain supportive of him during the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Republican Support Dips
Currently, about 60% of Republicans approve of Trump’s economic approach, a decline from 80% in February, prior to the onset of hostilities with Iran. The poll results align with rising gasoline prices attributed to the Iran conflict, as well as stalled efforts for a conclusive ceasefire.
Trump’s influence within the Republican Party remains formidable. This was exemplified when his chosen candidate defeated Representative Thomas Massie, a vocal critic, in a recent primary. The data underlines Trump’s stronghold among Republicans despite growing economic dissatisfaction.
Ariel Gutierrez, a 55-year-old Republican from Wisconsin, notes the impact on his family. He has been aiding his teenage children with gas expenses as costs rise. Gutierrez attributes these changes to Trump’s policies, not his predecessors.
Broader Disapproval
Outside his base, Trump remains largely unpopular. A mere 37% of Americans approve of his overall presidency, showing a slight rise from 33% in April. Most disapproval comes from Democrats and about 70% of independents.
Among U.S. adults, about a third approves of Trump’s handling of the economy. This shows a decline from his initial second-term approval level of 40%. Economic confidence was a pillar for Trump during his first term but has weakened due to ongoing skepticism.
Notably, Richard Baumgartner from Las Vegas supports Trump, attributing economic instability to necessary wartime effects. He expects conditions to stabilize after the conflict resolves.
Immigration Issues Offer Reprieve
In contrast, immigration enforcement appears as a redeeming feature for Trump, with nearly half of U.S. adults expressing approval. His tactics have varied, moving from aggressive public postures to quieter enforcement methods in recent times. Within the party, 80% of Republicans approve of his immigration policy.
Brenda Theiss, an independent from Alabama, appreciates Trump’s decisive actions compared to previous presidents. She credits him for significant border control efforts amidst ongoing debates on illegal immigration.
Continued Foreign Policy Challenges
Despite escalating international assertiveness and actions such as the capture of the Venezuelan leader, Trump’s foreign policy approaches meet limited approval. Only a third of Americans support his Iran strategy. Younger Republicans, in particular, show growing disapproval.
Amanda Wylie, a Republican-leaning independent from Georgia, criticizes the resource allocation toward Iran, questioning the overall benefits for Americans. She expresses concern over the link between rising gas prices and the anti-nuclear objective with Iran.
The AP-NORC poll surveyed 1,117 adults between May 14-18. The results include a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
