The Ukrainian Emergency Service has released a photo showing damage to a residential building in Sloviansk, located in the Donetsk region. This damage results from a Russian-guided bomb hitting the city center on Monday, August 31, 2026.
Continuous Attacks on Kyiv
Russian forces continue to target Kyiv, as well as surrounding cities, for a fifth consecutive day. The ongoing strikes have left some supermarkets with empty shelves, following repeated hits on warehouses. These attacks are part of an intensified aerial campaign that began over four years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine. The constant air raid alerts in the Kyiv region have significantly disrupted daily life. Recent major attacks have resulted in significant civilian casualties, with two July attacks killing nearly 50 people, and a Saturday strike claiming at least 38 lives.
Impact on Education
Schools were scheduled to reopen on Tuesday. However, uncertainty prevails about parents sending their children back to classrooms. The schools have air raid shelters, and there is an option for classes to be conducted online.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed on social media that Russia aims to exhaust the Ukrainian population and the country. In response, Ukraine has targeted Russian online retailers and oil facilities, impacting their availability, although these strikes have not resulted in significant civilian casualties.
Efforts Against Drone Threats
Monday morning in Kyiv was marked by a black smoke cloud. Cities in the Kyiv region, such as Brovary and Boryspil, experienced aerial attacks on warehouses, leaving four people injured, as reported by Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional military administration.
Zelenskyy admitted Ukraine faces challenges in countering the fast-moving jet-powered drones that Russia deploys. Between Thursday and Sunday, Russia launched nearly 1,500 drones at Ukraine, including 800 jet-powered units. Ukraine’s combat aircraft attempt to counter these, and four companies are working on developing effective interceptor drone technology. Zelenskyy noted that one has shown the most promise, but did not elaborate further.
Assurance of Food Supply
Russian strikes on food distribution centers have disrupted Ukrainian supply chains, raising public concerns about shortages. Zelenskyy adviser Serhii Beskrestnov reassured citizens on social media, stating that Ukraine will not face hunger. He emphasized that logistics are being restructured and European allies are prepared to assist if necessary.
Ongoing Attacks on Energy Infrastructure
Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, aiming to disrupt energy supply as winter approaches. A major drone attack hit Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region, damaging an energy facility. Details on the damage were not provided, but officials anticipate a continuation of large-scale strikes on energy infrastructure.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it shot down 239 Ukrainian drones across 14 Russian regions, including occupied Crimea and the Black Sea. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian missile attack on the Russian city of Belgorod resulted in three fatalities, according to acting regional Governor Alexander Shuvayev.
