Ukraine commemorated its 35th Independence Day amid ongoing Russian aggression. As Ukraine marked its independence from the Soviet Union, Russian attacks intensified, targeting infrastructure and civilians.
On Aug. 24, 1991, Ukraine declared independence, a milestone celebrated even as threats loom. Heightened security followed a warning of potential terrorist acts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, joined by European leaders, vowed to pursue peace without yielding to Moscow’s demands.
A recent Russian drone strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih resulted in 16 deaths and 130 injuries, highlighting continued violence. Ukrainian strikes inside Russia aim to disrupt logistics, but Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of escalating tensions.
“The war with Russia sees Ukraine advancing,” Carrie Filipetti, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, observed. “Their deeper territorial penetrations have alarmed Russia.”
Ukraine targets Russian infrastructure, such as warehouses of Wildberries and Ozon, to weaken Moscow’s resources. According to Filipetti, this strategy prompts panic in Russian leadership.
“Putin resorts to attacking civilian areas, attempting to demoralize Ukrainians,” Filipetti noted. Ukrainian authorities heightened vigilance, advising citizens to safeguard public transports and media sharing.
Independence Day celebrations involved high-profile European leaders, demonstrating international solidarity. Filipetti emphasized the significance of continuous support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Drone and missile exchanges resulted in casualties, with Ukraine witnessing seven Russian attacks and a retaliatory strike killing three in Russia’s Krasnodar region. Russia’s reliance on foreign fighters underscores recruitment challenges.
“Russia aims to exhaust Ukraine before exhausting themselves,” Filipetti declared, citing the lack of territorial gains and soldier losses.
Zelenskyy cautioned that Russia’s initiative faltering impacts Ukraine’s resolve, projecting deterrence beyond borders. Filipetti asserted that unilateral invasions meet firm resistance, not rewards.
Emma Bussey, a breaking news writer, stressed consequences for aggressors like China, mirroring the international stance against territorial violations.
