Two weeks ago, Tyler Adams, a midfielder for the United States men’s national soccer team, appeared on FS1’s “First Things First”. Adams highlighted Malik Tillman as a standout performer for the team during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Adams praised Tillman, stating, “He creates so many chances for us. He’s such an important player. He’s a guy that plays at the highest level in Champions League and in the Bundesliga.”
Tillman’s performance has recently gained significant attention. On Wednesday, July 1, he scored a stunning free-kick goal in the Round of 32, leading the USMNT to a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. This marked his first World Cup goal, instantly drawing comparisons to Landon Donovan’s famous goal against Algeria in 2010. Tillman’s goal is considered one of the best in USMNT history.
Adding to the drama, Tillman revealed his bloodied right foot after the match, explaining that he had changed cleats just before his free kick due to an injury. He remarked, “Someone stepped on me, but yeah, it’s just pain, I guess.”
Looking ahead, Tillman faces a significant challenge in the Round-of-16 match against Belgium on Monday, July 6. Striker Folarin Balogun, who scored earlier in the tournament, received a controversial red card during the match against Bosnia, disqualifying him from playing against Belgium. FIFA’s regulations prohibit the U.S. from appealing the red card.
Balogun’s absence is a setback, as he leads the USMNT with three goals. However, other players, including Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, have shown potential by scoring goals and creating opportunities. If the USMNT defeats Belgium, it would mark their first quarterfinal appearance since the 2002 World Cup. The team aims to make history, as the only time the U.S. advanced beyond the quarterfinals was in the inaugural 1930 World Cup.
