The Vegas Golden Knights are navigating mixed emotions following their third appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since their debut in 2017. The team has quickly become a top contender in the league, but their rapid success has also drawn criticism and a fair share of detractors.
Star forward Jack Eichel offered a thoughtful response to the news that his team has been recognized as the most-hated NHL team in the country. Results from a Rotowire poll conducted across all 50 states revealed that Vegas topped the dislike list in 11 states, outpacing any other NHL franchise. The polarizing perception stems from their success, including one Stanley Cup win and only missing the playoffs once.
However, the Golden Knights are not just viewed as a successful team. The organization has garnered a reputation for its controversial decisions, including abrupt player trades and coaching changes. Bruce Cassidy, for instance, was dismissed just eight games before the playoffs, and the organization reportedly prevented other teams, such as the Edmonton Oilers, from interviewing him.
Eichel, who joined the team following his trade from Buffalo in 2021, noted that within league circles, the team holds a different reputation. He mentions, “If you ask guys in the league, Vegas ain’t on people’s ‘no-trade’ lists. This is a place people want to be and (where) people want to play.” His comments highlight positive sentiments among players, who are proud to represent the team and the city.
The franchise is known for its allure in attracting free agents. While Eichel did not specify names, players like Dylan Larkin, who expressed interest in transferring, reportedly considered the Golden Knights a desirable team.
