Wes Streeting, formerly the U.K. health secretary, declared on Saturday his intention to run for Labour leader and prime minister. This decision follows significant losses in local elections for the party.
Streeting stated at a London think tank event, “We need a proper contest with the best candidates on the field, and I’ll be standing.” His announcement came shortly after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham expressed his intention to vie for a parliamentary seat, a step that would enable him to join the Labour leadership race.
The leadership contest appears imminent, yet remains officially unannounced by Members of Parliament. In his resignation letter, Streeting criticized Keir Starmer’s leadership, stating he doesn’t see Starmer leading the Labour Party into the next general election. He mentioned a lack of vision within the party’s current leadership.
Streeting’s resignation adds to the departures of four other members of Starmer’s government following the disappointing local election results where Nigel Farage’s Reform U.K. party gained significant traction.
Streeting, known for his ambitious political aims, is one among several contenders potentially challenging Starmer’s position. To initiate a leadership election, contenders need backing from at least 20% of Labour MPs, according to party guidelines.
Keir Starmer remains determined to retain his position, cautioning that any leadership battles could lead to governmental instability. He emphasized a focus on pressing issues such as the cost of living crisis and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Starmer has held his position for just under two years following Labour’s sweeping victory in the last national parliamentary elections.
