Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, has moved on to the general election for California governor. He seeks to follow Governor Gavin Newsom in leading the state. Becerra has emphasized his extensive public service experience, including roles as state attorney general and U.S. health secretary, to present himself as the best choice among many candidates.
He expressed his readiness to uphold California’s values and governance. As of election night, his opponent for the general election was still undecided. Becerra is set to potentially face Republican Steve Hilton, known for his support from former President Donald Trump, or Democrat Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist heavily investing in his campaign.
Becerra’s roots in Sacramento, with Mexican immigrant parents, and his family’s story reflect the challenges of his campaign. He struggled initially but gained momentum in its final stages. The withdrawal of a top Democratic contender, Rep. Eric Swalwell, amidst allegations, allowed Becerra to garner support from key groups and Latino leaders.
Becerra has committed to countering the policies of former President Trump, having previously taken legal actions against his administration. Trump recently raised unsubstantiated voter fraud claims, prompting investigations by federal prosecutors. In response, Hilton suggested changes to mail voting processes in California, proposing to limit mail ballots to those who request them.
Becerra has faced scrutiny for his leadership as health secretary, particularly in managing shelters for unaccompanied migrant children during the pandemic, amid criticisms of their conditions. If elected, Becerra plans to address state crises such as energy costs and housing shortages through emergency declarations. He aims to freeze home insurance rates too.
California is among the most diverse states, yet its recent governors have been predominantly white men. Becerra’s election would mark the first Latino governor since the late 1800s. Governor Newsom, due to term limits, cannot seek re-election for a third term.
