Recent revelations have put Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner under intense scrutiny. Ex-girlfriends have come forward, alleging disturbing behaviors and violent episodes.
Allegations and Controversy
The accusations include rape fantasies, heavy drinking, and violent behavior. Platner also faces criticism for a chest tattoo of the Totenkopf, a symbol associated with Nazi death camp guards. His alleged sexting with younger women and insensitive remarks about a Taliban attack have sparked further outrage.
Lyndsey Fifield, an ex-girlfriend, shared her experiences with The New York Times, stating they met in 2013 during Platner’s time at George Washington University. Fifield described how Platner jokingly discussed his Totenkopf tattoo, claiming parallels between his military unit and the Schutzstaffel as ‘killers.’
“He said this a lot: If anybody ever broke in here, I would rape them,” Fifield recounted, noting it was about power and dominance.
Platner has acknowledged struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from his military service, contributing to these issues. “I’ve been open about a dark period in my life,” Platner stated, referencing a time of excessive self-medication with alcohol and personal relationship challenges.
Another ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot, noted Platner’s controversial online posts, which reinforced her concerns about his attitudes toward women.
Political Reactions and Campaign Stance
The Republican National Committee highlighted these scandals, questioning Platner’s suitability for office. Delanie Bomar remarked on the potential impact of Platner’s behavior if elected, stating, “If he’s willing to do this to his own girlfriend, imagine what he’s willing to do in a position of political power.”
Despite these controversies, Platner has focused his campaign on progressive economic policies, advocating for higher taxes on billionaires and tax relief for working-class citizens.
Platner’s campaign has attributed some of the accusations to political motivations, pointing to the conservative backgrounds of his critics. Nonetheless, his candidacy faces ongoing challenges amidst the growing list of allegations.
