Israel is facing significant international criticism following allegations of mistreatment involving activists detained on a flotilla. This flotilla attempted to breach Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. Multiple nations, including France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Ireland, and the Netherlands, have expressed concern about the reported abuse of their citizens.
According to flotilla organizers, Israeli commandos intercepted the participants in international waters last month. Out of approximately 420 detained individuals, 67 were taken to the hospital, with 12 requiring further hospitalization. The reports included claims of rubber bullets fired at close range, tasers used on faces and upper bodies, and stun grenades thrown into groups. There were also severe allegations of forced stress positions, removing women’s hijabs against their will, humiliating strip searches, sexual taunting, groping, and multiple claims of rape, including anal rape with a handgun.
Several members suffered injuries, with one captain, Arno Meys, sustaining a punctured lung. Another member endured a broken foot, and a third had a broken leg, being monitored for internal bleeding and cardiac issues. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated there were reports of sexual violence, exposure to the cold, beatings, and humiliation of French nationals. These alleged abuses could be criminal offenses, prompting France to request an investigation into its nationals’ treatment on the flotilla.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) rejected the allegations of abuse, stating their operations were in line with protecting naval security. They emphasized that IDF orders mandate respectful treatment of flotilla participants. The Israeli Prison Service also denied any abuse.
All international detainees have been released since the incident. The condemnation from allied governments intensified after National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video taunting restrained flotilla members. Following the video’s emergence, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares criticized the treatment of the activists.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Ben-Gvir’s actions, distancing them from Israeli values. The situation has drawn attention from the United Nations, which recently added Israel to a blacklist for sexual violence in conflicts. This inclusion followed allegations of sexual violence documented by the UN from 2023 to 2025.
Despite ongoing scrutiny, no substantial international action has occurred. Experts assert the need for Israel to investigate and hold perpetrators accountable.
If you know someone affected by sexual assault, the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673 offers support. The hotline, operated by RAINN, connects callers to local rape crisis centers. Online support is available at rainn.org/get-help.
