BLUE HILL, Maine — Graham Platner has secured the Democratic Party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate. Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer, defeated two rivals in Maine’s Democratic Senate primary, according to the Associated Press. He’s supported by progressive figures like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Ro Khanna.
Platner will face moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who was unchallenged for the GOP nomination, in the upcoming midterm elections in Maine. This race is crucial to determining whether the GOP will maintain control over the Senate.
Platner’s campaign, focused on an economically populist agenda and advocating for the working class, also outpaced Democratic Gov. Janet Mills in the primary. Mills, initially backed by influential Democrats but suspending her campaign due to Platner’s lead in polls and fundraising, still appeared on the ballot.
“We’re going to win in November and take power back for the people,” Platner expressed confidently at his last rally before the primary.
Platner has faced several controversies, including inflammatory Reddit comments, and a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol which he has covered. Recent reports of him sending explicit messages while married, and allegations of violent behavior and rape fantasies, have surfaced. Platner denies the latest accusations.
The controversies led some Democrats in Washington to question Platner’s viability as a candidate. However, Platner received support from Maine voters despite these issues. He thanked them for their backing as he navigates these challenges and highlights his personal journey through PTSD from military service.
Rep. Ro Khanna, who organized a rally with Platner, expressed opposition to misogyny and acknowledged Platner’s growth since his military tours. Khanna supports Platner’s economic policies targeting corporate influences.
Maine voters have mixed opinions on the impact of Platner’s controversies. Some conservatives feel Platner is too damaged to represent the Democrats, while some Republicans see potential in Platner despite imperfections.
Sen. Susan Collins, while engaging in local visits, commented that recent allegations against Platner are troubling and require further explanation.
Platner faces attacks from Republican groups, including a super PAC and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, labeling him as elitist and highlighting his controversial past.
Nonetheless, Democratic backers have not withdrawn support for Platner, emphasizing unity to defeat Collins.
Platner has gathered large crowds and substantial funding, positioning Maine as a critical opportunity for Democrats to regain the Senate majority. Collins, a moderate with a history of bipartisan voting, remains a strong opponent.
