Gordie Howe International Bridge Set to Open

3 weeks ago 0

A new bridge over the Detroit River, co-owned by Canada and Michigan, is poised to open, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Named the Gordie Howe International Bridge, it will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Friday, with traffic expected to start later in the month.

U.S. President Donald Trump previously threatened to halt its construction, demanding Canada transfer at least half of the bridge’s ownership to the U.S. government. These demands surfaced amidst tensions over cross-border trade issues.

The bridge connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit. It is crucial for the economic flow between Canada and the United States. Initial plans indicated the bridge would open earlier this year.

Negotiated by former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and funded by Canada, the project seeks to reduce congestion at the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor tunnel. Construction began in 2018.

“The bridge represents cooperation between our countries. It benefits Canadians, Americans, and commerce,” Carney remarked ahead of entering Parliament. He labeled this development as “positive news.”

As the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement is under review, Trump has issued new tariff threats. Carney has criticized U.S. economic tactics on an international scale.

Michigan’s Democrat Senator Elissa Slotkin described the Canadian-funded project as beneficial for her state’s economic outlook. Michigan, a key swing state, was won by Trump in both 2016 and 2020.

Governor Snyder previously clarified Trump’s claim that Canada owns both sides of the Gordie Howe Bridge was incorrect. Canada and Michigan equally own it. Canada funded the construction, with repayments through toll collections. Michigan and the U.S. acquired their ownership stake without financial input.

The Gordie Howe Bridge will complement the Ambassador Bridge, the busiest crossing between the U.S. and Canada, handling 25% of trade. It plays a vital role in auto manufacturing. Attempts by the Moroun family, private owners of the Ambassador Bridge, to block the Gordie Howe Bridge’s construction were unsuccessful.
