Lives Disrupted: The Impact of Conflict on Nabatiyeh, Lebanon

In Nabatiyeh, Lebanon, Aida Jleilati and her daughter began sifting through the remnants of their home early on Tuesday. The city, located in southern Lebanon, had suffered airstrikes by Israel in late May. Jleilati and others returned to assess their homes after a U.S.-Iran deal was announced, bringing hopes of halting the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

Fighting in the region continues, though strikes have reduced in number since the agreement. Many displaced residents are now attempting to evaluate the condition of their properties. Jleilati’s home, a part of a collapsed building, was on the first floor. The airstrike that caused its downfall profoundly impacted her family.

“Everything we worked for is gone,” said Jleilati as she recovered what she could, including her husband’s diving gear.

Nabatiyeh, an ancient city known for its bustling markets, has experienced extensive destruction over recent weeks due to conflict. Bulldozers now work to clear debris, and while an agreement offers a potential end to hostilities, residents remain wary. Ceasefires have been unstable, often leading to continued aggression.

Israeli forces have advanced into southern Lebanon, nearing Nabatiyeh, known as a historic trade center. The city, vital for religious and cultural activities, connects deeply with Shiite traditions, celebrating significant events such as Ashoura.

At the core of the city, business owner Kamel al-Kamel confronted the ruins of his enterprise. His supermarket and coffee roastery were devastated by the conflict’s toll.

“Thank God we are still alive,” stated al-Kamel, reflecting the ordeal’s severity, which surpasses previous wars he witnessed.

Some residents like Samar Zuraik, whose house stands albeit damaged, face irreplaceable losses like the death of her son during an airstrike. She expressed skepticism about the current circumstances, deeming the city uninhabitable due to ongoing shelling and infrastructural damages.

Medical facilities, including the notable Najdeh El Chaabiyeh Hospital, have been overwhelmed. Hundreds received treatment for the latest conflict-related injuries and fatalities. The latest war has claimed over 3,800 lives in Lebanon, alongside casualties on the Israeli side, as reported by national authorities.

Hostilities resumed with artillery and rocket exchanges near Nabatiyeh, threatening the fragile truce. Seeking solace in their finding, Jleilati and her daughter plan to return to Nabatiyeh as conditions stabilize, longing for the day they can reside in their rebuilt home.
