FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Norway secured a 4-1 victory over Iraq in their World Cup Group I match, led by Erling Haaland’s impressive performance. Haaland marked his tournament debut with two goals, including one capitalizing on a defensive error. The Manchester City forward now has 57 international goals.
Haaland’s debut in the tournament showcased his determination to lead Norway. He commented on his performance by stating, “Of course I will try. It’s about continuing and don’t think too much. It’s difficult at this stage. But I’ll focus on [the] next [game] and of course be happy. But also stay calm.”
Norway’s coach, Stale Solbakken, expressed confidence in Haaland’s readiness, noting the striker’s performance in a recent training session. “You could see that he lived up to the occasion,” Solbakken said.
Leo Ostigard added to Norway’s tally in the 76th minute, scoring off a corner kick delivered by Martin Odegaard. An own goal by Iraq’s Aymen Hussein sealed their fate before the final whistle.
Iraq’s own Aymen Hussein managed to level the score nine minutes after Haaland’s initial goal. Amir Alammari set up Hussein’s equalizer with a precise cross, which found Hussein for a header that evaded Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland.
Haaland’s first goal came in the 29th minute from a cross by David Moller Wolfe. Haaland’s sliding right-foot finish excited the Norwegian fans, who filled the stands in red, cheering in synchronized Viking row chants.
Hussein scored his 34th international goal in this match, adding to his previous successes, including an important goal against Bolivia in World Cup qualifying.
Iraq was participating in their second World Cup, their first since 1986, and their supporters were visible in the stands. The crowd’s energy briefly bolstered Iraq’s spirits.
Despite the loss, Iraqi player Hussein Ali shared his pride, saying, “It’s a proud moment to be back in the World Cup after 40 years. To lose 4-1, it hurts.”
