Two young leaders in Senegal gained prominence by overcoming the political establishment in a significant election, inspiring hope among the continent’s youth. Their victory came to symbolize change, but now they find themselves at odds.
Ousmane Sonko, known for his charisma and activism, was initially barred from running for president in 2024 due to a conviction for defaming a former government official. His close ally, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, took his place and secured the presidency, making history as Senegal’s youngest leader at 44 years old.
Upon assuming office, Mr. Faye appointed Mr. Sonko as the prime minister. However, after months of internal conflict, Mr. Sonko was dismissed from his post two weeks ago. This Saturday, their party members will decide who will lead, further emphasizing the tension between them. Currently, Mr. Sonko leads the party as its president, while Mr. Faye holds a ceremonial position as honorary president.
Age has not softened Mr. Sonko, 51, who accuses Mr. Faye, now 46, of sidelining the party and straying from the campaign commitments aimed at combating corruption and challenging the elite. Mr. Faye, on his part, argues that the party has been prioritizing Mr. Sonko’s personality over its foundational values.
Their disagreement extends to managing Senegal’s substantial debt, although their main conflict centers on who should represent their party in the 2029 presidential election.
