Tensions Escalate as Russian Warship Fires Warning Shots Near UK Yacht

2 weeks ago 0

A Russian warship fired warning shots near a UK-registered pleasure yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday. This event, which did not lead to any damage, highlights the growing tensions between Russia and the UK.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence has initiated an investigation after the yacht reported being targeted by a Russian navy ship roughly 20 nautical miles (23 miles, 37 kilometers) south of the Isle of Wight, outside British territorial waters. No injuries or damage to the yacht were reported, and it continued its journey from the UK towards France.

The BBC reported that the yacht, which lacks a motor, had unintentionally moved closer to the Russian vessel due to foggy conditions. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that the crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich attempted communication with the yacht, observed on a risky course near the warship. They used flares and sound signals when the yacht failed to respond.

“After the distance had closed to 150 meters (500 feet), the frigate’s commander decided to fire warning shots across the vessel’s bow using small arms,” the Russian ministry stated. The yacht subsequently altered its course and moved away.

Both countries’ accounts of the incident are similar. The UK’s Defence Ministry confirmed that warning shots were fired by the Russian vessel to prevent a possible collision. The shots were not aimed directly at the yacht.

Russian warships frequently traverse the English Channel under the watchful eye of the Royal Navy. At the time of this incident, the Royal Navy patrol vessel HMS Mersey was monitoring the Russian ship and assisted the yacht’s crew.

The UK military had been observing Admiral Grigorovich throughout April, as it escorted six civilian vessels associated with Russia near the UK. This incident took place shortly after British commandos intercepted a sanctioned tanker in the Channel, suspected of being part of a Russian “shadow fleet.” UK defense authorities do not believe the events are connected.

The tanker captain, an Indian national, faced charges for transporting Russian oil, breaching international sanctions related to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. He was detained following a court appearance on Tuesday.

The UK has experienced several close encounters with Russian ships in the region. In a notable occurrence last November, they warned Moscow of potential consequences for any territorial incursion after the spy ship Yantar was detected near the UK’s waters north of Scotland.

In April, the UK and Norway tracked a Russian attack submarine and two spy submarines operating north of the UK for several weeks. A Royal Navy frigate, aircraft, and numerous personnel actively followed these Russian vessels to prevent their “nefarious” activities targeting underwater infrastructure, according to then-Defense Secretary John Healey. He accused Russia of using geopolitical conflicts as distractions to increase harmful activities against Europe.

Five years ago, a similar incident occurred when Russia stated a warship fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs to expel the British destroyer HMS Defender from an area near Crimea claimed by Russia. The UK refuted the account, asserting its ship was not attacked. This was a rare post-Cold War admission by Moscow of using live ammunition against a NATO vessel, underscoring heightened military risks.
