1 week ago 0

The Netherlands secured a commanding 5-1 win against Sweden in the World Cup, held in Houston. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored twice to help the Dutch team move to the top of the Group F standings. This victory followed their 2-2 draw against Japan in the opening match.

Brobbey’s contributions in the first half put the Netherlands on the path to success. Gakpo added to the scoreline after halftime, with his first goal arriving in the 47th minute. A cross from Denzel Dumfries facilitated this goal. Gakpo’s second came in the 54th minute with a right-footed shot from the left box.

Sweden, despite their earlier 5-1 win against Tunisia, faced a significant setback with this defeat. The loss marked their largest World Cup defeat since the 7-1 loss to Brazil in 1950.

The Dutch strategy to exploit the wide areas early on proved effective. Brobbey’s first goal in the fifth minute set the tone, as Gakpo delivered a cross into the box, enabling Brobbey to score with a right-footed shot.

Brobbey’s second goal came in the 17th minute, thanks to another cross from Dumfries, and was expertly finished with a sliding effort into the far post.

Anthony Elanga scored Sweden’s only goal, avoiding a shutout in the 59th minute. They had several missed scoring opportunities earlier, with Netherlands’ goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen making four crucial saves in the first half.

A potential goal by Gustaf Lagerbielke for Sweden was disallowed for offside shortly before halftime. Lagerbielke hails from a noble Swedish family.

In attendance were the Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, who witnessed the game from a luxury suite. The match attracted a significant crowd of 68,777, predominantly supporting the Netherlands.

Crysencio Summerville, who played a key role in Gakpo’s second goal, scored for the Netherlands in the 89th minute, celebrating with NBA star Steph Curry’s ‘night night’ gesture.

The Netherlands will face Tunisia in Kansas City to conclude group play, while Sweden takes on Japan in Dallas.
