President Trump recently addressed the issues surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, absolving himself of any responsibility for its condition. The pool has been plagued by green algae blooms and peeling polyurethane after a rushed $16.4 million renovation.
During a press briefing, Mr. Trump explained that external factors, not the renovation itself, led to the problems. He suggested that vandals with knives and fertilizer targeted the historic pool, causing the algae and physical damage.
Mr. Trump stated, “They put, somebody said, fertilizer in the water. If you put fertilizer in the water, you get algae. But somebody said they might have put fertilizer. They did something to create the algae.” He also mentioned strips of polyurethane floating in the water and speculated that someone had cut them using a box cutter or knife. “I can’t help it if somebody goes in with a knife and starts hacking it up,” he added.
Official confirmation came from Katie Martin, spokesperson for the Interior Department. She reported that five individuals have been arrested for vandalism, and citations have been issued to five others.
