The scenic backdrop of the Alps and Lake Lucerne painted a picture-perfect view. However, the atmosphere told a different story. The usual crisp, cool air was replaced by unexpected heat and humidity that felt more akin to Luzon in the Philippines than Switzerland.
Soccer fans, dressed in red and white, gathered along the waterfront to watch a World Cup match on giant screens. The game, Switzerland versus Bosnia-Herzegovina, took place far away in the U.S. But the excitement was palpable each time Switzerland scored, echoing through the thick air.
This visit stirred memories of a reporting trip from the previous year. During the trip, I hiked the Rhône Glacier with a Swiss glaciologist. He explained Switzerland’s vulnerability to climate change. Temperature extremes are becoming more common, leading to rapid glacier retreat.
