Protest at San Francisco’s Trans March
California state Senator Scott Wiener faced confrontation from pro-Palestinian demonstrators regarding his stance on Israel and Gaza, while attending San Francisco’s Trans March. Footage revealed activists urging him to leave, with the video garnering over 5 million views on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The march serves as an annual community-led rally advocating transgender rights. During the event, protestors surrounded Wiener, a Jewish senator, criticizing his position on Gaza, while shouting profanities and chanting against ‘Zionists’ as he exited the park. Wiener later described the confrontation as physically intimidating, leading him to leave for safety.
Incident Statement
In a post on X the following day, Wiener stated that demonstrators harassed him verbally and physically, making it unsafe for him to remain at the park. He criticized the protestors’ statements regarding his ‘Israeli handlers’ and other extremist remarks. This was the first incident preventing his participation in the Trans March.
A separate confrontation earlier in the week involved an individual allegedly cornering him and staff at a bar, resulting in the individual’s removal after abusive behavior. Wiener emphasized the severity when opposition and disagreement cross into harassment.
Political Campaign and Reactions
The confrontation occurred amid Weiners’ campaign to succeed former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in California’s 11th Congressional District. The race, marked by scrutiny of Wiener’s records on various issues, has intensified attention on his views regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Wiener has faced criticism for his initial reluctance to label Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide, a stance that shifted earlier this year following a congressional candidate forum. In a subsequent video, Wiener acknowledged the destruction in Gaza and described Israel’s actions as genocidal, explaining the difficulty in using such terms due to their Holocaust-associated origins.
Despite shifting his perspective, Wiener maintained support for Israel’s right to exist and defense funding, though he opposed the sale of offensive arms to governments failing to commit to peace.
LGBTQ Advocacy Record
While confronted over Gaza, demonstrators acknowledged Wiener’s legislative contributions to LGBTQ rights in California. Since joining the Legislature, Wiener authored or supported numerous bills enhancing protections for LGBTQ Californians. Among these include SB 107, designating California as a refuge for transgender individuals and their families, and SB 497, strengthening protections around medical records and expanding transgender ‘shield laws’.
His other advocacy efforts include health care access, anti-discrimination measures for LGBTQ seniors, and creating non-binary gender options on IDs. Wiener also served as chair of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus.
