Kenny Truong, a 21-year-old student at Wichita State University, tragically drowned after jumping into the Blue Pool at Tamolitch Falls, Oregon. Truong, who was from Kansas, visited the site with friends on June 26, 2026. Despite efforts from bystanders and first responders, he was unable to escape the cold waters.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 8:47 p.m. reporting the incident. Witnesses noted that Truong struggled as he attempted to swim to shore before submerging. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Upper McKenzie Rural Fire, responded to the situation.
Linn County Undersheriff Micah Smith conveyed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Kenny Truong during this unimaginable time.”
Truong was a finance major at the W. Frank Barton School of Business and participated in the Cummings Student Managed Investment Fund. Wichita State University confirmed his involvement to Fox News Digital.
The water at Tamolitch Falls is known for its striking appearance and challenging conditions. With an average temperature of 37 degrees, the water can cause immediate physical shock. The remote nature of the location, combined with minimal cellphone service, complicates rescue efforts. Authorities warn that reaching a hospital from this area can take several hours.
Officials stressed the dangers of the site, noting that previous lives have been lost there. They advised visitors to be aware of risks such as cold water and substantial cliff heights ranging from 10 to 60 feet around the pool.
Kenny wasn’t just my best friend; he was my brother,” wrote Carter Nguyen in a GoFundMe organized to remember Truong. “He had a way of making everyone around him feel seen and loved.
Nguyen praised Truong for inspiring others, saying, “Every room he walked into got a little brighter just because he was in it.”
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office urged visitors to prioritize safety by understanding local conditions and acting quickly by calling 911 in emergencies. For further information on the area’s conditions, visitors are encouraged to contact the McKenzie River Ranger Station.
