Melat Kiros Unseats Longtime Incumbent in Colorado Primary

2 hours ago 0

Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist and first-time candidate, secured a significant victory over Representative Diana DeGette in a Democratic primary for the Denver area. This win marks a notable achievement for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Kiros’s triumph unseats DeGette, a 15-term incumbent, illustrating the influence of the growing insurgent coalition within the party. This coalition recently made headlines by winning several congressional contests in New York.

As an immigrant and newcomer to the political scene, Kiros’s rise is noteworthy. Her victory in a deeply Democratic district means she is likely to win in the upcoming November election. Kiros, who is both a lawyer and a doctoral student in public affairs, positioned herself as an outsider ready to tackle affordability issues that she believes the Democratic establishment has not adequately addressed. Her stance against U.S. support for Israel also played a crucial role in her campaign and resonated with many voters.

Despite facing a fundraising challenge due to an influx of support for DeGette from external groups, Kiros’s grassroots campaign prevailed. Early vote counts on Wednesday showed her leading by more than five percentage points with nearly 80 percent of ballots tallied.

In her campaign biography, Kiros emphasized how she was dismissed from a Manhattan law firm in 2023. Her termination followed her refusal to retract a letter questioning Israel’s historical legitimacy, defending pro-Palestinian protesters, and criticizing the firm’s stance towards activist law students.
